According to the inscription above the entrance it was built in 1758. In the 18th century the inn was owned by Samuel Weston and went under the name of the red Lion. In 1780 it was assessed for Land Tax at 5s. 6 l/2d (28 pence).

In the early part of the last century it was acquired by the Brooke family who continued to own it until they sold it to Greenall Whitley about 1927.

It became the Norton Arms in 1822.

The building is Grade II listed and the listing description is as follows :-

Rough cast brickwork with slate roof, two storeys and attic, three bays, with two bay, two storey wing with basement to north. Stone moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. Stone doorcase with plain pilaster, moulded caps and archivolt with key. Entrance approached up stone steps. An arched tablet at first floor fills blank space over entrance. Facade windows are casements with keystones to arches but north wing has sashes with glazing bars. Gable end chimney stacks.
