The stone was previously situated by the roadside near Ditton Bank Farm, where the murder took place, but is now in the churchyard of St Michael's Church in Hough Green, Widnes.

Inscription reads

'In memory of Edward Culshaw whowas inhumanely shot through the head and robbed in this place, on the 19th January 1784 by John Thoms, an Irishman, who was executed at Lancaster for the horrible deed, having, before his execution, confessed the fact'
